The Azerbaijan International Tourism Fair has taken place from the 3rd to the 5th of April 2014

The Azerbaijan International Tourism Fair has taken place at the Baku Expo Centre from the 3rd to the 5th of April 2014. Since its inception, AITF has had the active support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The exhibition also had the support of UNWTO (World Tourism Organisation), ITTFA (International Tourism Trade Fairs Association), Azerbaijan Fund for the Promotion of Export and Investment (AZPROMO) and the National Confederation of Entrepreneur Organisations of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ASK). The exhibition has been granted the "UFI Approved Event" status by the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry.

For 13 years, AITF has determined the trends and directions of development of the travel and tourism industry in the region and created the foundation for a successful following year in the tourism industry, stimulating further development in the sector. The importance of the exhibition was shown by the visit of President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. The President visited the displays of leading tour operators, international airlines and hotel and restaurant equipment producers from Egypt, Slovenia, Montenegro, Stavropol krai, China, Dominican Republic, Morocco, Greece, Turkey and many other countries. The foreign exhibitors displayed the potential of their countries to the President and their desire to establish stable business relations with Azerbaijan in the field of tourism, information and cultural exchange.

The opening ceremony for the exhibition took place with the participation of Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan Abulfas Garayev, UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai, Minister of Urban Development and Tourism of Albania Eglantina Gjermeni, Minister of Tourism of Croatia Darko Lorencin, Minister of Economy of Lithuania  Evaldas Gustas, Minister of Sustainable Development and Tourism of Montenegro Branimir Gvozdenovic and other guests.

In his welcome address, Minister Abulfas Garayev commented that "The holding of the 57th Session of the European Commission of UNWTO in Baku shows the prestigious status of Azerbaijan and has been beneficial to AITF 2014. The respected status of the exhibition has led to 356 companies from 38 countries at the exhibition today. This is the most authoritative and prestigious tourism event in the whole Caspian region".

Taleb Rifai also noted the successful results of introducing electronic visas in Azerbaijan, he also discussed the attractive image of the country for tourism which will be improved even more by its hosting of the European Olympic Games, the Islamic Solidarity Games, Chess Olympiad and other international events.

This year, 40% of exhibitors were local companies and 60% represented companies from abroad. The exhibitors presented their exclusive tourism offers that have been especially developed for the Azerbaijan market. Overall, there were over 80 tourist destinations presented at AITF 2014.

24 National and Regional groups had displays at the exhibition with the support of national tourism boards and national embassies, including stands from Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Dominican Republic, Egypt,  Zagreb (Croatia), India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Morocco, Slovenia, Stavropol Krai (Russia), Thailand, Turkey, Sochi (Russia), France, Montenegro and Czech Republic.

One of the repeat exhibitors at AITF was Bulgaria. The country has been the Partner of the AITF exhibition several times and this year had the status of Registration Partner.

Over three days, the exhibition demonstrated a wide range of tourism services, uniting the most prominent players on the tourism market,  including agencies and tour operators, national groups, international representative offices, air, land and water transporters, hoteliers from different countries, tourism and commerce organisations and organisers of active and extreme tourism. One of the most interesting and

colourful events at the exhibition was the great scale of displays put on by the regions of Azerbaijan. Tourism offerings presented at the exhibition included various types of tourist activity, including rural and eco-tourism, rafting, ski and sea resorts and many others. Nearly 60 hotels were included in the regional display, some of which are part of global hotel chains.

Many companies in the Medical Tourism section were presented at the exhibition this year. Medical centres and sanatoria from Azerbaijan, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Russia, Slovenia and Turkey displayed their latest achievements in the development of healthcare and spa tourism. Famous clinics, including  Sarafianos Private Clinic (Greece), UAB SK Imeks Meditinos (Lithuania) and MAX Grundig Klinik Bühlerhöhe (Germany) made their debut in the section. Russia was represented by the Caucasian Mineral Waters sanatoria which are well known in Azerbaijan. The world famous therapeutic qualities of naphtalene oil were demonstrated by Chinar Spa Naftalan and Naftalan Hotel by RIXOS sanatoria. Other debut exhibitors included companies from the Lithuanian Medical Tourism Cluster – LITCARE and the Turkish Healthcare Travel Council.

Another section that was developed by AITF this year was Immovable Property Abroad. ETU Homes, RealMax č AFIK Group presented a number of segments in the Turkish and Cypriot market in the residential sale and construction  sector in resort zones. Yachting companies MG Yachting č Golden Bay Cruise exhibited at AITF this year. The 2nd Caspian International Boat and Yacht Show will be co-located with AITF next year. A separate Boats and Yachts section will be presented at the exhibition.

Exhibitors noted that the exhibition met their expectations. Director of Czech Tourism in Moscow, Robert Navotny stated that “We see Azerbaijan as a market with a lot of prospects. This exhibition helps us to get information to our potential clients to show the variety of Czech tourist destinations. We are happy with the organisation and we intend to contunue with our tradition of exhibiting every year'.

Marketing Director, Alesya Nikitina, of debut exhibitor WildTrek Safaris, stated: ''We have high hopes for future cooperation connected to this exhibition. I think that the exhibition provides a great opportunity for this.”

The first day also saw the beginning of the business programme - the signing of the memorandum on cooperation between the Azerbaijan Tourism Association (AzTA) and the UNWTO. The event was attended by Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan Abulfaz Garayev,  UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai and Chaiman of the Board at AzTA Nakhid Bagirov. A seminar organised by EcoLife professional tourism industry journal took place on the second day.

Another long awaited event on the second day was the awards ceremony where certificates were presented to the most notable exhibitors this year.  The independent commission awarded exhibitors in the following categories :

Best stand implementation - SMARTEK LLC

Best Corporate Style - The tourist office of the embassy of Egypt

Best National Concept - Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism of Bulgaria

Best Presentation of a Destination - National Stand of Turkey

Best Tour Operator - SW Travel

Best Hotel Presentation - Rixos Quba Azerbaijan Hotel

Best Airline Presentation - AZAL

Best Debut - Dominican Republic tourism board; eGlobal connections

Most active interaction with visitors - Ministry of Economic Development of Stavropol krai

Best Stand Design - Georgian National Tourism Administration

Best Presentation of Azerbaijan as a Tourist Destitantion - AZTA (Azerbaijan Tourism Association)All of the events of the exhibition were reported in the Daily News newspaper which had the usual success with the exhibitors and visitors.

Over 5,000 visitors came to the exhibition over three days, with 80% of them being industry specialists and an improvement on the results achieved last year. According to statistical data, over 5000 important international contacts were made between industry specialists.

A new feature at AITF was the Fast Track system, which allowed the visitors to register at the Baku Expo Centre themselves by scanning their barcode on the ticket. Over 1,000 visitors used this system, which made registration quicker.

The exhibition has received a lot of positive comments from visitors, who noted that the interesting presentation of popular tourist destinations really helps in working with outbound tourism.

The 2015 exhibition will take place at the Baku Expo Centre from 2nd to 4th April 2015. The exhibition organisers are UK company ITE Group and their partners Iteca Caspian LLC. The success of the exhibition was the result of the attraction of international companies as exhibitors by the agent and partner network of ITE Group PLC, including ITE London, EUF (Turkey), GIMA (Germany), ITE Gulf (Dubai) and many others.
